Absence and Sickness

Employee absence results in significant cost to employers, it is estimated to cost an average of £550 per employee per year with an average of 6.9 days absence per employee.
The most common causes of long term illness are acute medical conditions, stress, musculoskeletal injuries, mental ill- health and back pain. The main cause of short term absence is minor illness followed by musculoskeletal injuries, back pain and stress. Stress-related absence and reported mental health problems are increasing, non-genuine absences are reported as amongst the top causes of short term absence (30% for manual workers and 23% for non-manual workers) and presenteeism – people coming to work ill – is causing concern (CIPD Absence Management Annual Survey Report 2015).
Manage your absence levels by ensuring there is an effective and proactive absence management approach (AMA) in place. A robust AMA coupled with flexible working policies can help reduce time and money spent on absence.
Heard HR Solutions Ltd offers various services including:
- ‘Start to finish’ absence case management for all your employees.
- Implementation of effective absence policies, procedures and practices (including management training).
- One off support such as assisting to identify trends and the root causes of individual absences, carrying out welfare reviews (home visits), drafting letters and capability reports.
Disciplinary and Grievance

Disciplinary policies and procedures provide clear rules about the standards and behaviour an employer expects from their employees. Many disciplinary issues can be resolved informally but where this is not possible formal procedures should set out a fair and reasonable way of dealing with the issues.
Where an employee is unhappy about a management decision or a workplace issue, the grievance process provides an opportunity to reach a considered resolution after a genuine exploration of the available options. It is preferable that grievances are resolved informally and as early as possible, it may be helpful to arrange mediation at this stage. Should formal procedures be necessary, it is essential that they are managed fairly, professionally and effectively as this can be a worrying and stressful time for all involved.
Heard HR Solutions Ltd offers various services including:
- ‘Start to finish’ Disciplinary and grievance case management for all your employees.

Mediation is a process of dispute resolution. An independent and objective third party (the mediator) helps your organisation to resolve conflict between individuals (or teams) in the workplace.
There are many reasons why conflict arises. This ranges from a perception of unfair treatment, unclear job roles, inadequate training to poor communications. Some effects of conflict may be absenteeism, low trust, under performance and low morale.
Mediation in the workplace is an informal, confidential conflict resolution process that the parties enter into voluntarily. The solution to the conflict is up to the parties and any agreement they reach can, if the parties choose, be evidenced in writing. However, whilst any agreement reached is legally non-binding it is morally binding upon the parties.
Mediation in the workplace strengthens the organisation’s ability to resolve conflicts. The benefits of mediation are that it can save time, helps to limit stress (reducing the disruption to the lives of those in dispute and to your organisation’s operations) and reduces financial costs (of time spent on formal procedures or legal proceedings).
